You should care more for the quality of each post you make, not the points accrued from it. On-topic, I just earned -100 points for deleting a post! "Oil an emergency?! I do take care on the quality, but sometimes I have a small point to make.

Right, back on topic one gets 3 points for making a post and -100 points for deleting one, which explains several members' negative points. The only one that is unexplained is Paul's 30,000 points. There may be a logical reason for it.

The only one that is unexplained is Paul's 30,000 points. There may be a logical reason for it. There is an obvious possible explanation for Paul's points. He's the administrator, so might be able to give himself whatever points he likes. I would like to add my observation that the downside to awarding points purely for posting is that, hypothetically, someone could post lots of messages simply in order to accrue points and gain ranking, rather than to add anything to the topic in question. This is demonstrated by the illogical fact that simply by deleting a post you lose points. It would seem that whoever designed the system assumed that messages would only ever be deleted for punitive or editorial reasons, thus making it an unpleasant event. It means the ranking rewards quantity and not quality. That's almost inevitable in an automatic system, since there's no way the forum engine could evaluate the quality of someone's post. What I would like to suggest is that if anybody does want to simply increase their points or ranking, that they start a topic of their own, and simply post messages to that. Otherwise, for example, it could become difficult to judge which threads are active because when you go to look, it appears that nothing new has actually been said. It could also, possibly, result in members not posting on those threads because they stop checking them for pertinent posts. Because, as yet, there is no advantage gained from attaining any given rank or points score, I don't really understand the desire to accelerate up the scale. Someone who is ranked at Commander is no more valuable a contributer than a first-time poster. Nor do higher ranks acquire any more authority. So in the grand scheme of things, the rankings are only a quaint little fun feature of very little significance compared to the interesting and engaging conversations that take place on this forum. I would be quite happy if the forum were to stop displaying the points scored and simply show a rank. I don't know if that's possible, but I dare say others like to see how they are progressing.
All the best, David

I agree, but loose the Ranking too. I think, if anything, "Points" and "Rankings" can be quite divisive. I've been on fora before that have been ruined purely by people saying 'I have more points than you therefore, shut up'. I've seen this on a Canal site regarding electricity - a new member was trying to correct a mistake from a high-points member, a mistake that could have potentially caused a major fire aboard. Thankfully, the high-pointer was eventually quelled and accepted his mistake, but he had gained support purely as he posted QUANTITY not QUALITY until people actually bothered to read back and see he'd been slammed for giving the same crummy (I'd use a better word, but the filter would kick in!) information before. I no longer use that particular forum. Sorry, I know that sort of thing is unlikely to happen here, but it just shows how these systems can be, for wont of a better phrase, abused. (That's odd. The filter hasn't been upset by the word 'Canal') "omnia audite, omnia videte, nil dicite; omnia edite, omnia bibite, nil prodigite; nunquam aliquid, nisi pro vobis, inhonorati facite"

All they really need to show is the name, to be honest. I know I went on a while ago for what I got, but I've gone a bit mad recently and I apologize.
