Nigel comments in his notes for second sight that he had been inspired by assignment one. Just finished watching assignment one on dvd and was very impressed by the echos that he managed to incorporate into the script.Second sight is one of my favourite adventures and every time I listen to it I pick up something new.I assume that this is because of the layered structure with the strands of the different narratives all weaving together so that repeated listens are called for to untangle it all. Next bit in white in case of spoilers- Just wondering how everyone else views this in relation to the events of wall of darkness did the new sapphire and steel exist and are they trapped too?

I still think anyone in their right mind who cares about spoilers wouldn't read a thread with the title of an unlistened to play, but here's my comment in white:

I think that everything in the first 3 seasons DID happen, but now S&S are reliving them over and over. They're looped in their own timeline. The "new" S&S are trapped on a disc in the possession of Steel, so I'm assuming they're trapped in the loop too. It's stated that Ruby isn't in the trap, and is supposedly the only one of the operatives who hasn't given up on them. This would make sense considering she saw them escape from other traps (such as in Second Sight) that she would have more hope for them escaping. This supports the idea that Ruby witnessed the events of "Second Sight", but is by no means a clear cut fact.

Thanks for post I agree that people should expect spoilers but was being sensitive as have seen post on other forums complaining about not using spoiler tags.
Loved your explanation a good way of looking at things I think in keeping with what I had been imagining.

I keep thinking the same sort of thing. I think that the continuing references back to the video adventures, and new adventures with references to others, are in keeping with that sort of scenario. Even in the first assignment (on video), there are numerous references to a previous assignment concerning the Marie Celeste. Nothing about the series has ever set the assumption that we are "witnessing" the assignments in real-order... In several they do talk about the timeframe of a particular place-time being "the present" though, and those are usually pretty close to the air date of the episode... But I don't recall if anything in the audio series (after the trap in Assignment 6 video) has placed "the present" of an assignment in a particular timeframe...

Well, there are references in a couple (Surest Poison and Wall of Darkness come to mind) that place them as occurring within the last six years.

And Wall of Darkness certainly comes after some of the other audio adventures (since there are internal references to them), but it doesn't indicate how long after.

Surest Poison doesn't refer to any of the others, though, as far as I can remember.

So, yes, mostly the others could be earlier. There's no reason to assume (except where there are references, like Second Sight coming after Mystery of the Missing Hour) that we're hearing them in the order they occurred.

I guess I'll answer in white too, although I agree that anyone reading should be expecting spoilers...
I think it was clear that in the assignment, Sapphire and Steel were trapped, and assumed lost, thus the new Sapphire and Steel - but then they were un-trapped, and the replacements were dissolved? unmade? so if being experienced inside a trap, it was a closed loop, that trap within a trap was escaped from.
