Hi All, We want to do something with the "Rank" names for the forum, something to do with Big Finish and something to do with our ranges. We have scratched our heads and not come up with anything overly clever and fun so we thought we might open the doors and take your suggestions. The best suggestion will win themselves.... erm.... 1000 points and of course the satisfaction of knowing they invented our forum ranking system. So here are the rules: - Must be to do with Big Finish - Must be meaningful - Must be fun Pretty simple right? So put on your thinking caps and come up with something. Oh and for those of you that don't know what the ranks are, well they are just a small reward system for being a good poster and being involved. The more you post the higher your rank. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Hmm. To do with Big Finish, eh? All I've come up with is a ranking system based on UNIT members from the old series of Doctor Who:
Private Harris Corporal Bell Sergeant Benton Lieutenant Richards Captain Yates Major Beresford Colonel Crichton Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
Barnaby x
Please note that the views expressed by Barnaby are his own opinions and do not reflect official Big Finish policy. They may also be daft.

Hmmmm.... it'd be nice to come up with something that wasn't range specific... What about something audio history related... Analog Digital or Wax Cylinder, Tape, Record, CD, Digital... Urgh. Or perhaps not. Maybe lengths? 30 Second Clip Part One Single Disc Double Disc Double Disc with Extras Or if you didn't mind going range-specific you could go with Doctors: 1st Doctor 2nd Doctor 3rd Doctor, etc as forum members "regenerate" into later Doctors. Gosh that is hard.

So many possibilities... Where to start?
1. Time Lord ranks. Those more au fait with the detailed canon could probably come up with a whole range of levels in the hierarchy.
2. What about job roles at BF? Starting with the tea boy, working up through catering (a highly prized job nonetheless), sound engineer, director, producer and so on. BF staff will doubtless have a better idea of the actual roles.
3. Degrees of custom or listening. Range from Audio virgin, through Casual listener and Avid Fan, up to Crazed collector or Slavering sound junky.
4. Here's another one for the BF staff to provide details. As the food appears to feature so highly in the pulling power of BF casting, what about the various dishes on the menu ranked by popularity in the BF green room?
5. Are the booths at BF numbered or labelled? How about ranking by booth number and the cast member who most often bags that booth?
Just a few thoughts off the top of my head before I dash out the door to get groceries.
All the best,
David

I think the tricky thing is making it something that people could instantly understand (or at least understand with little thought) and I think it'd be nice to not be Who-specific just because BF is more than Who. Maybe something fun using "BF" like: Beginning Fledgling Burgeoning Follower Big Fancier Burning Fanatic Beyond Freaky Barmily Fantastic! Okay, that's all I got I think. :)

I rather like that one, actually. If you don't mind me revising the concept a little bit... -Promotional Release -Single Disc -Double Disc -Boxset -Ongoing Series
Member of the Prydon Academy Costumer Group. I also draw things!(And for the record, it can be pronounced "Caw-lee" like the dog breed, or "Caw-lay." Either works!)

These are all excellent suggestions. I think we really want it to refer a bit more specifically to all our ranges. How about the following:
1. Classic Member 2. Tomorrow Person 3. Dreddful Judge 4. Collinsport Resident 5. Archeology Professor 6. Time Detective 7. SG-1 Atlantean 8. Gallifreyan
What do you think? Have I got the ordering right?

I have to say I think this one fails on both the instant understandability (I've no idea what number 4 is about, despite owning well over 200 BF CDs) and in terms of ordering, which appears to be completely arbitrary. Why should any particular series be thought of as "better" than another, which is implied by the ranking? I much prefer something like davidlant's 3rd suggestion, or maybe the one from jonwes. These both seem appropriate, fun, and easy to understand.

What about characters from the audios; Benny, Sapphire, Steel, whoever's in Stargate and Dark Shadows, and of course the all good Doctor, in an appropriate order.

Just a thought
1-William Hartnell 2-Patrick Troughton 3-Jon Pertwee 4-Tom Baker 5-Peter Davison 6-Colin Baker 7-Sylvester McCoy 8-Paul McGann 9-Christopher Eccleston 10-David Tennant
There may be a copy right issue using the names though.

Heavens, it's a tricky one isn't it? There are some really good suggestions here: I love the Doctor Who-based ones, but let's not forget that we've eight other ranges to consider. It's hard to incorporate them all without risking offending someone - "Why is Dark Shadows ranked lower than Doctor Who?" and so on. Maybe the way to go is to stick to generic stuff, like the reverse acronym suggestion (Big Fan etc.) or the audio-based one (Trailer, Cassette, Download, CD, etc.).
Any further flashes of genius?

How about the following, derived from the initials of BIG FINISH:
Beginner Introvert Guarded Friendly Inspired Negotiator Intrepid Stalwart Hero
These are sufficiently non-specific to avoid associations with people's preferences, and are indicative of how contributory the member has been. I'm open to suggestions for better words that fit the criteria of course.
It does all depend on how many levels we need to cater for.
All the best,
David

How about genre-style ratings which are evocative of all the ranges but not specific.
In no particular order:
Watcher (especially suitable for the lurkers) Companion Professor Elemental Guardian Judge/Adjudicator Eternal Master
Edited to add: Oops, sorry much of this overlaps with a previous post which I didn't see! (Sorry Jim!)

Hmm. What if we combine Jim and Alex's into:
Crew Companion Professor Judge Elemental Undead Time Lord
That covers most of our ranges - and is scaled in order of social importance, rather than range importance. I think Elemental/Eternal look too similar, so I've gone for Undead (there are plenty of those dotted round all our ranges from Dark Shadows to Sapphire and Steel). I think we're getting there...
