Recommendations for playing .m4b audiobooks on Android phones

I have an Android phone and need recommendations for playing the .m4b audiobooks. There are a ton out there. Any suggestions on the best free players?

I used to use the free Mortplayer app, but now I use Smart Audiobook Player by Alex Kravchenko. The free version gives you a 30 day trial of the all features and then goes to a basic free version.

The full version is only $2 and in my opinion is well worth it. I have no need for anything else .

If you rename the .m4b file to .m4a, the audio file will play on the default Android media player, Google's 'Play Music', and also most other music apps. No need to pay for any specialist app when a simple file rename will do.

Thanks for the suggestions. You'd think Android could read .m4b by default. Weird.

I verified that the file rename works. But only if I do it through my actual computer. One at a time.

Trying out the smart player. What was wrong with the mortgage player?

One thing I noticed - the bit rates on the ab files are all over the place. Some are 288, 257, 252...Does that have any effect?

That's true, but there are specialist Audiobook apps that remember track positions, something that the normal player doesn't

Was that predictive text, mortgage instead of Mort? If so, there wasn't much wrong with it and in fact I used it for a couple of years. For some reason (I can't remember why now) I decided to try something else. Found Smart player and was hooked. I like the way I can listen to more than one book and it keeps position of them all (useful for solo listens and family listens).

They're probably using what's known as VBR or Variable Bitrate. You set the bitrate that you want but it fluctuates throughout the file as more or less is required which can give these different numbers.

As for players, I use Listen Audiobook Player when I've got the CD and have divided the release up into individual files to my liking (Episode X, X Trailer, Behind the Scenes, Music Suite etc.). If it's a downloaded audiobook release from Big Finish, however, I use Akimbo Player as that one can read the chapter markings within the single file.
